[...] The Dell saga goes into second stage. Despite me having a priority XPS next day on-site warranty it took three days, one click-trough of on-line wizard, two emails and three phone calls to get the collection of my broken laptop going. And now it will only be collected on Monday. Doh! [...]

Hi Aigar,
as Jochen said, I've never heard of a company liking a laptop sent in with Gnu/Linux on it. Not sure which is better: to remove the hd, reformat with windows or what? IIRC, they may say they need to run tests on it with w32 software or some such nonsense. If they don't complain and dont reformat it, I'd be very curious to know.
And keep up the positive attitude! The adage 'may you code in interesting times!' works well for you, go with it!

Just remove your hard disk before sending the laptop to Dell. I did that twice with my Asus model and it has been no problem (even though my second send-in was because of a broken IDE controller - Yay, new mainboard a month before my warranty expired! :-)).
